I went with saintmichael
tonight to see Brokeback Mountain
. I'm not going to say much about the movie itself, no spoilers at all. But I have to say that movie really got to me. I haven't cried like that at a movie in over a decade.
At one level the movie is somewhat formulaic and predictable. But it has a deepness beyond the superficial that I found powerful and moving. To me it seemed to try to answer the question, "what if you gave your life to someone and he didn't know what to do with it?"
Every few years a book or movie comes along that changes how people think about the world, if only in a small way. 1984
was that kind of book, Network
("I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore!") and Being There
were that kind of movie. I think Brokeback Mountain
has the potential to be that kind of movie too. I know that there are some things that I'll never be able to see the same again.
