Last night was fab with a side of glam. Saw Xanadu
at the good old Castro Theater. saintmichael
and hubby joined me for the show, and we had much fun. I hadn't seen the movie since I was 16, so I'd forgotten just how damn cheesy it was. I wonder how many producers and casting directors Michael Beck had to blow to get that role - his acting wasn't even up to porn standards.
I really can't imagine enjoying (let alone watching) that movie anywhere besides the Castro. The audience was most of the fun. People dressed up, wore rollerskates and glitz, and even sang along. (Peeve of the eve: the big hairy bear next to me who apparently knew the whole script by heart because he was saying (and singing) everything along with the movie. He'll be right next to Capt Mal in that special level of Hell.) Some boys even brought glowsticks in neon orange and green, and deployed them strategically along with the lyric "Xanadu, your neon lights will shine..." to great laughter and applause.
The movie's saving grace was Gene Kelly. As swan songs go, it wasn't terrible for him. Hmm, IMDB says Michael Beck had a role in an episode of Babylon 5, but I can't recall him. Anyone remember that episode?
