In case anyone hadn't heard, there was a big explosion in downtown SF this morning. Apparently an underground transformer blew up. I was on MUNI at the time, but luckily my train didn't get stopped in the tunnel. I exited at Powell station and walked down Market St toward Embarcadero where I normally get off. I think every cop car in SF was there at Kearny and Market. And all these people who had been evacuated from their buildings were just standing around watching. A big commando van pulled up. I figured it was time to be far away, just in case there was, you know, danger associated with the unexpected explosive event. One woman got burned pretty bad by the explosion, but as far as I know that was the worst of it.
Then one of my employees quit. I was reading just this week a motivational expert on, you guessed it, movtivating employees. One thing he said was that about 5% of employees are "allergic to work". There's really nothing you can do to motivate, mentor or force them to be productive employees. This guy was one of those. I'm glad he's leaving so I can hire someone who has a chance of contributing more than the overhead he soaks up. But the timing is awful, and I'm not looking forward to going through all that hiring process again. But if anyone knows a good java web developer, send him/her my way.
