The San Francisco Dept of Public Health provides a web site where you can look up the inspection records on any restaurant in the city. The Greek place I went to today got a score of 89 out of 100, which doesn't sound too bad, but it had 8 different low risk violations at it's last inspection 6 months ago. Ugh.

Put a percent sign (%) at the start of a name to do a wildcard search - e.g. "%pomo" will find "Pasta Pomodoro".

I have to confess to having a rather ambivalent laissez-faire attitude about food hygiene. Even the most highly rated place has been caught with their pants down (so to speak) in terms of inspections. I guess it's my microbiology background, but I'm always aware that there are a bazillion organisms out there, and the saying "That which does not kill me makes me stronger" is very true in this context - We need constant exposure to moderately nasty things to keep going. My old micro prof put it best, "Just imagine that everything in the world is covered with a fine, layer of feces... cuz it is." (And after travelling through India... well let's just say that the "layer" is not really "fine" there)

This all being said, I don't go out of my way to hunt down places to eat that have giant, distended cans of yummy botulism brewing in the storeroom. :)

Yes, keeping your immune system healthy by exposure to random things seems like a good idea, until you accidentally lick the handhold on MUNI. I remember reading that people who played in the dirt when they were kids almost never get herpes as adults, since they get immunity from some virus in the soil. Seems to have worked for me. No tigers around here!

A teacher once told me we eat several pounds of dirt a year. I guess if you eat spinach it's more like ten pounds :-)

And their mango chicken rawks! But I had to stop eating there after a friend of mine who worked there told me what they did in their kitchen. Sorry, forget I said that, I'm sure they've fixed that problem by now.
