Last night as I was cooking dinner I heard a weird sound from upstairs. I went up to check on it, and found that one of the big glass doors that opens onto my deck had spontaneously shattered. The door is just a big wooden frame with a single pane of glass about 2 by 5 feet, no mullions. Thankfully the safety glass had stayed in the door and didn't get all over the place.
Of course I was cooking risotto and couldn't stop! So I just waited until later to give it a good inspection. No dead bird out on the deck, but there was a spot in the breakage pattern that radiated from a spot about 2" from the edge, about 1/3 from the top. The door frame has always been warped, so I think it finally torqued the glass enough to break it.
I got a ref for a repair place from our property manager, and they are coming to look at it this afternoon. I'll probably have a board over it for the weekend.
The freaky thing is that this is not the first time this has happened to me here. Shortly after I moved in here the glass door in my shower shattered spontaneously. I came back from doing errands to hear the clatter of glass falling onto the floor and the bathroom in ruins. Somehow the force of the breaking sent shards of glass all over the bathroom and out the door. It took me ages to clean up! I'm just glad it didn't happen while I was showering. Bare feet on broken glass is badness. Just ask Bruce Willis.
