I woke up this morning to the sound of water draining out of pipes. I got up and checked, and sure enough, the water is off and the pipes are dry. Lately this seems to happen about once a month. Usually it's not a big deal, but today I have laundry to do, and the dishwasher needs run as soon as I get some detergent, and I need to clean the bathroom, as well as shower and shave... How can I be domestic without water? I have guests coming later today (yay for visit by redarius and cutenyeboi!), but I'm worried that if this water thing goes on too long that I'm not going to be able to get the place ship-shape. Sigh.

Since I live in a townhouse that is far above street level, when the water comes back on, there are way too many linear feet of dry pipe to fill with water. Usually it takes several minutes for the stinky air to clear out, and sometimes the plumbing burps for days after an incident.

With all the rain we've gotten of late, I could have set up a catch basin and collected my own rainwater. Does anyone do that anymore?

my grandma does that! she uses a big tin/metal pail that's a lot more wide than tall - i think it's from the 50s or 60s!
she's in south dakota tho, where people do that stuff.
