I do usually like the web comic Joy of Tech. But today it kind of rubs me the wrong way. I can't figure out if I should be offended or if it's just a stupid sophomoric joke that I should shrug off.

I've lived in California so long that my political correctness calibration is all screwed up.

it's totally ganked from this old comic, which I find a funnier treatment of it.

The JoT version is less safe (offensive wise), but I don't really find it offensive as I could see a gay male saying it as well.

As with all edgy humor I think the crux of the issue of funny vs. offensive has to do with intent + context. How the receiver takes it matters less than what the author/artist was trying to say and the awareness of that person vis a vis their audience.

Context:
If the author did a series of similarly themed strips, I'd say it would be justified to label it offensive.
If the author regularly offends and pretty much is a potty-mouthed equal-opportunity offender then I'd probably find it funny (think South Park).

Audience:
If the known audience is broad or includes people that are the butt of the joke (pun intended), then it seems that folks are more accepting of the humor...sort of a recognition of the ridiculousness of stereotypes.
If the target audience was traditionally anti-gay (like a conservative xtian publication), then that context would make this more offensive.

It seems it's all relative.

I didn't find it funny, by the way. Too sophomoric for me.
