Last night I went to my friend David's annual Chanukah party. I've been going to this party for at least 6 years. He always makes potato latkes, and we always light the candles and sing for the goi boys. Over the years the composition of guests has changed a lot. Used to be lots of cute gym boys, for a year or two it was skinheads (go figure), the last two years it's been burning man alternaguys. Lots of weird facial hair, ya know.
The party was fun. I got to see some old friends and hang with them, and I taught some goi boys how to play dreidel. I had brought the traditional gelt (chocolate coins in gold foil) for us to gamble for. I left before they started playing strip dreidel - the stories from last year's party were a bit over the top and I didn't need to stay to see if there was a repeat!
The funniest thing last night was the Israeli boy who showed up. Chanukah is a much bigger deal in the US than it is in Israel. So he didn't know the songs or how to play dreidel or really anything about the holiday. For some reason I found that amusing.
