google mana - 3650
24th-Jul-2004 11:09 pm
I went to see I, Robot with navyboy this evening. It was a lot better than I expected. I think Mr. Asimov would have been happy with the story. And can I just say that Will Smith is looking damn fine these days?

After the movie we got some teriyaki for dinner, then he went off to a concert and I came home to rest up for the Dore Alley fair tomorrow. Now I'm a bit bored, so I checked my google mana .

A straight-up search for the short and long forms of my full name gives me a google mana score of 3650. I have a fairly uncommon name, so I'd bet that most or all of those hits are actually me. If I do an image search on just my last name, there are no pictures of me, but I found ones of my dad and of two of my cousins.

3650 is about 3 times redarius score, not even considering he gets a lot of false positives for the Irish Republican Army (nah nah!). But to keep things in perspective, Adrian Lamo gets over 13K, Cory Doctorow gets over 70K, and Steve Jobs over 550K. My father, who is quite well known in his field, only gets about a 400. Openly Gay Assemblyman Mark Leno gets about 11K, and presidential candidate John Kerry almost 3 million.

I wonder what I'll have to do to break 10K. I mean, without killing a rock star, curing AIDS or digging up Jimmy Hoffa's body.

...how does this google mana score work?

It's the number of references to your name on the internet as found by Google.

Google for your name in quotes. At the top of the page it will say "Results 1-10 of about XXX". That number is your google mana.

If you have a common name, you may need to take extreme measures to filter out the references to people that aren't you.

well, considering the extreme commonness of my name, i think my google mana would be HIGHLY overinflated.

yeah. i got "about 32,100". of those attributable to me, i'd say maybe about a dozen. heh. (not that i'm going to try to go through 32k web matches to see how many actually do!).
