Stargate

Last night I watched the premiere of Stargate Atlantis on the SciFi channel (with kuteluvr and navyboy). It was actually really good. The set design was awesome - they really made Atlantis look both amazingly advanced and gorgeously comfortable. Casting was just OK in some roles but mostly good, and at least everyone could act (more than we could say for Star Trek: Voyager).

Don't read this if you are going to watch later!

I knew Colonel Toughguy wouldn't survive the episode. He had "special guest star" written all over him.

I was disappointed they had to re-cast the actress who plays Dr. Weir. I liked the blond one (from the end of last season SG-1) a lot more. The new one isn't nearly as interesting.

I think I'm going to be very annoyed at the number of awkward geeks in the cast, Dr. Klutz in particular.

So far it looks like Ancient technology kicks Wraith technology's ass. How did the Wraith defeat the Ancients?

The Ancient woman who stayed behind at the Antarctic outpost when Atlantis flew off to another galazy... Was she the same woman who was found under the ice a few seasons ago? Or was that another? The woman from that other episode had the Ancient plague, I think.

Both Ancients and Wraith have supernatural powers. Ancients can heal, Wraith can drain life and cast mental illusions, and both have some kind of extra senses. I wonder what else we'll see.

And since everyone else is doing it...

I saw both parts this morning!

Joe Flannigan is sooooooooooooooooo hot.

And if you listened to the Ancient hologram she said that they were outnumbered and over confident kinda like the Asgard are with the replicators.

And I think the Ancient lady at the beginning was supposed to be Ayianna, I checked on the IMDB and it says it was her.

Hmm, I couldn't find that on IMDB. Where did you look.

Major Sheppard is pretty hot, but I like Lt. Ford too. Can we just kill Drs. McKay and Beckett now though?

I liked Beketts accent and McKay wasn't quite as bad as he used to be.

I really enjoyed SG: Atlantis too. I'm encouraged by the visuals and where they seem to be taking the story. I do have a few gripes, but they are minor:

(a) inter-character dynamics look like a reshuffle of SG:SG1's characters (just like Trek does with each new series). Major Sheppard's personality seems modeled after the O'Neill character and Dr. McKay's rambling is too similar to Daniel Jackson's. It just seems lazy to me to copy the SG formula too closely. As the series develops, though, I suspect that the similarities between the characters in the two series will diverge -- just as then tend to do in the Trek series that get cloned from one another.

(b) the bumbling Irishman humor of Dr. Beckett was a bit over the top and I suspect that my friends in Ireland would not find this representation funny. It could have been re-worked so that the humor was still effective without being so degrading to the character.

Stuff I loved:

-- wraith self-healing!
-- the bad-guys hiss. It's a spooky sound. I love it.
-- invisible ships
-- ships that read your mind.

I expect that this show will easily beat out Enterprise on my list of must see TV.

I read a very insightful post on the scifi.com forums about how the SG1 -> SGA mapping parallels that of ST:TNG -> ST:Voy. Let me see if I can remember...

Old commanding officer, bald guy. New one, woman with bad hair.
Old show doctor/geek is a sexy woman, new show is a dorky man.
New show has pilot who has a bad record but a good heart.
New crew is cast far away unable to return home.
New crew is mix of two different cultures (Starfleet/Maquis vs SGC/Athonians).

He had some other parallels as well. Pretty funny.

I really hated Dr. Beckett. I hope he dies soon. And McKay just needs to get laid!

I was wondering what would happen to their social lives since they were about 90% male, but mixing with the Athonians gives them more opportunities to mix, so that should help balance things.

....hmmmm, what could that missing thing be from the new show....oh yeah, now I remember - a GAY character! It could have totally worked, too.

I have hopes for Lt. Ford ;-)

It would have to be one of the civilians though ;p

I managed to catch the pilot as well (despite the fact that I should've been sleeping. Or trying to sleep. It was moot - I ended up in bed by 11, but didn't actually fall asleep till 2. Doh!). I enjoyed it a fair amount and look forward to future episodes. I agree with the comments about both Major Sheppard's hotness as well as kinda wishing they had kept the original Weir (she was pretty neat during the season premiere of SG-1).

I'm glad they're keeping the same self-deprecating tone which made SG-1 so endearing. They're totally aware that most of their plots are just rehashes of other sci-fi series, so they attempt to make up for it with wit. (Like the SG-1 episode with the time loop. Standard, almost banal fare, but made hilarious by having O'Neill and Teal'c doing some crazy stunts knowing there would be no consequences - like golfing through the wormhole).

Loved the part where the one Dr starts the countdown, "Chevron 1 encoded... Chevron 2" and Weir just gives him a "Don't be lame. Get on with it" look.

Oh yes, I loved the "chevron encoded" moment. Heh. I also liked "I'm thinking about a nice turkey sandwich..."

Bummer about the sleep. Were you perky enough to kick ass today?

You might as well speak about Stargate in a foreign tongue, because I have no idea what you are talking about!

Oh well, but I like the quiz. I would be your best friend, how nice :P
