My Cingular phone has always had crappy reception here in my home. Ever since the merger with AT&T the entire service has become abysmal. Yesterday I spent the whole day looking at the annoying little "No Access" message on my phone's display. Customer service suggested I power cycle my phone frequently. Morons.

So I went out and got a new phone from Sprint. I'm still waiting for it to be provisioned so I'm haven't gotten to use the darn thing yet, but I'm happy with the phone and the deal I got. I got the new Samsung VM-A680 phone, which not only takes pictures but also short video clips. I doubt I'll use the camera function much, but the phone is small and has a good UI and decent battery life. Best of all, I get 15% off my monthly bill because I work for a company that is a business partner with Sprint. OK, really best of all, Sprint has a tower atop the Castro Theater, so reception in my 'hood will rock compared to the anemic Cingular service.

I'm also looking forward to putting humorous pictures of all my friends on there to use for photo caller-ID. If I'm chuckling as I answer the phone, you'll know why.

I liked Sprint's coverage when I had them. I left them because after years, they still didn't have decent SMS/text messaging. :-/

SMS seems to work ok for my service. Maybe they fixed it. I think I can even have it do AIM messaging.

they didn't used to have sms at all. You had to log on to the web to do everything. It was awful--used to drive me crazy!

It's about time. I swear you've had that phone since I've known you. I want a newer phone but I'm waiting at least seven more months until my contract is up with Nextel. If they had a phone that could double my current battery life, I'll stay with them otherwise I'm off to a different provider that's not locked into using Moto phones with crap battery life.
